So, this week you need to finish up The Lemon Tree and work on your essay. Tolan leaves off the story of The Lemon Tree in about 2006. In the way he weaves his story, Tolan seems to leave room for the possibility of a peaceful future. But he is too much of a realist, and too embedded in the stories he is telling, to be overly or falsely optimistic. At this point, you all are probably wondering -- so what has happened since the end of The Lemon Tre e? Where do we go from here? As it turns out, it was good for Tolan to be careful of a falsely optimistic ending. As many of you undoubtedly remember, in the summer of 2014, hostilities flared into open warfare again, this time in the Gaza strip.
